The Captains - A Film by William Shatner

Reviews

by Myra Shinkman

The first thing to understand about "The Captains" is that it's not so much about the Star Trek captains from the five different televisions series and the latest movie franchise, but about the actors who play the captains.  And it's not so much about the actors as it is about one particular actor - William Shatner.

Is that a bad thing?  No, not at all.  After all, Shatner wrote it, directed it, starred in it, and, hey, he was the very first Enterprise captain (not counting Christopher Pike, of course).  "The Captains" is his baby from conception to actualization.

News

Last weekend may have been dominated by football and movie awards, but I spent part of my vacation in Los Angeles at a small Lutheran church in North Hollywood to see a local theater company.
Why that instead of hoping to see a glimpse of George Clooney? The play featured one of the most popular stars in the Whedon universe, Juliet Landau.

Slayage Moves to Semiannual Publication (and Other Academic-y News)

News

Slayage: The Journal of the Whedon Studies Association, now in its tenth year, will be published semiannually rather than quarterly.  The, WSA is encouraging papers for the upcoming Slayage Conference on the Whedonverses 5 (in Vancouver, Canada this year) submit to Slayage and ask that you also, if you are a professor, encourage your students to submit to Watcher Junior (More information after the jump).

The idea of Slayage was born in the spring of 2001 as WSA considered over one hundred and forty proposals submitted for possible inclusion in Fighting the Forces: What's at Stake in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (a book published by Rowman and Littlefield). It was learned, too, that two other collections of essays on Buffy were also in the works. It seemed obvious that there was a not-soon-to-be-exhausted international critical and scholarly interest in BtVS. With Whoosh! The Journal of the International Association of Xenoid Studies in mind as a model, Slayage was born early in 2001.  Founding editors are David Lavery and Rhonda V. Wilcox.  In the spring of 2010, beginning with Volume 8, Number 1, Slayage became "The Journal of the Whedon Studies Association."
