Been following this all weekend, getting warm fuzzies on behalf of Joss. About time he got major studio support: creative freedom, worldwide advertising, and a big budget. And it hasn’t opened in Japan yet………
Joss Whedon’s 3D tentpole breaks records for a superhero pic; overseas, it has already crossed $300 million according to The Hollywood Reporter
Disney and Marvel Studios’ The Avengers earned $18.7 million in Thursday midnight runs, a record for a superhero title and the eighth best of all time. Only three other films have hit $150 million or more since Spider-Man in 2008: this year’s The Hunger Games ($152.5 million), The Dark Knight ($158.4 million) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 ($169.2 million).
I attended, along with some of the Whedonopolis and Fandom Charities staff, the midnight screening at the AMC Burbank 16. All 16 screens were Avengers, three in 3D. All sold out. Click thru for more info plus an ABCNews video report from our location.
