For all its predictability that we’ve experienced throughout the series’ run, Merlin’s grand finale has a surprisingly surprising end. Bravo to cast, crew and writers on creating a game-changer of a finish. The series will leave you with a sense of completion, and how you feel about that completion is, of course as in all things, a matter of opinion. Without giving spoilers in the first paragraph, I can say that it was well-executed and mature.
Here it is, the penultimate episode for the Pendragons (sorry, I couldn’t resist). In “The Diamond of the Day, Part One”, Arthur’s army heads into battle at Camlan against Morgana’s dark army. With Mordred assisting her with a vengeful agenda, Morgana seems more powerful than ever. How can Merlin ever hope to uphold the prophecy’s best outcome in the face of such strong magic? Our favorite program is determined to give us an explosive finale, but I will reserve most of my judgment until the final episode airs.
I would be more excited about the series finale of “Merlin” if Episode 11, “The Drawing of the Dark”, wasn’t just so darn predictable. Granted, the acting is fantastic, as are the costumes, atmosphere, and nearly everything else, but the events that occur to initiate the long-expected turning point in the final story, do not surprise or offer anything new.
Prophecies, magical symbols, closely guarded secrets, destinies and dragons; You can tell we are getting close to Merlin’s finale as all these elements combine darkly in this one episode, “The Kindness of Strangers”. There is a lot of time spent on the run in the forest. The formula of the story seems very familiar– we’ve seen episodes with very similar conventions to this one before. Ladies and Lords, welcome back to Merlin’s Fifth Season run on SyFy! After a long break heading into sweeps, SyFy has led us with much anticipation into the final 5 episodes of the adapted fantasy series. This long of a break puts a bit of a wrench in the momentum of the show’s continuity, as those in the UK were able to watch the show’s entire run week-by-week, uninterrupted during its original airing. However, Americans are more used to this kind of thing with our favorite TV shows, so let’s move on to discuss how this episode works to bring us back into the storyline.
Warning, spoilers below!

This just in: Things heat up when Morgana shares her bed with a dragon! A baby dragon, that is. And she’s just petting it while laying in bed, so don’t get too excited. If I just managed to surprise you even a little with that first sentence, then you are either easily convinced or you read too much fanfiction. Either way, the second episode of Season 5, and Part 2 of “Arthur’s Bane”, is full of surprises. Look out below for spoilers.
Prepare yourselves for a real thrill ride of a final season as the BBC’s “Merlin” tells its final stories of magic, adventure, loyalty and betrayal.
Amy Hirschman was fortunate to speak with a few members of the cast– Colin Morgan (Merlin), Bradley James (Arthur), and Katie McGrath (Morgana). They gave her their take on everything from the show’s final filming to their favorite guest stars.
